Lecce Baroque

Lecce Baroque

If you decide to spend a holiday in Salento, a trip to Lecce will surely be a must. The well-known "Lecce Baroque" developed between the 1600s (golden age for the Baroque style throughout Italy) and the 1700s, during almost two centuries during which the bishops actively worked to lead the town to a splendour that could somehow evoke that of the Rome of the Popes. The Lecce Baroque - which is mainly manifested in architecture - is very loaded with scrolls and decorative motifs such as frames, cherubs, masks, floral motifs, fruit trophies, caryatids and so on. An unmistakable style easily recognizable in Piazza del Duomo, in the Basilica of Santa Croce and in many other corners of this splendid Baroque Lecce.
